Read introduction
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther - then an Augustinian monk and professor at Wittenberg - posted 95 propositions challenging the sale of indulgences. He intended a scholarly disputation; he ignited the Protestant Reformation. The Theses themselves are not yet the mature Lutheran Reformation: they are a young theologian’s pastoral protest against a particular abuse, working out the deeper logic of repentance and the gospel as he writes.
