Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God’s help, I do humbly entreat him by his grace to enable me to keep these Resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to his will, for Christ’s sake. Remember to read over these Resolutions once a week.

Read introduction
Jonathan Edwards composed his Resolutions between 1722 and 1723, while he was in his late teens and early twenties. They are private - meant to be re-read once a week, “remembering,” as he put it, “to be sensible that I am unable to do anything without God’s help.” They give us a window into the most rigorous Reformed mind New England ever produced as that mind was forming itself: terrifyingly disciplined, candidly self-aware, oriented entirely toward the glory of God.
