This essay was originally published in 2015 at Canon and Culture, a project of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission under the title “The Right Thing Has a Real Cost”. I was unable to find it on Wayback Machine. I further developed my thoughts about a holistic approach to abortion in this essay from 2018, though I still agree with the substance of what I wrote here. Another new development is emerging evidence that child allowances do reduce abortion.

Matthew grew up in a family of 15 children and completed his medical training in Baltimore, Maryland.
