According to [Techcrunch](http://www.techcrunch.com/?ref=mereorthodoxy.com), Google has [decided to charge users to access the full text](http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/09/06/amazon-google-to-enter-ebook-business/?ref=mereorthodoxy.com) of some of the books they have indexed, which will doubtlessly add one more layer of complexity to authors who want to ensure they get paid for what they write.

More importantly, it moves Google one step closer to becoming the [iTunes](http://www.itunes.com/?ref=mereorthodoxy.com) of books. With them [potentially stepping into the crowded cell phone market](http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/03/google-getting-more-serious-about-the-gphone/?ref=mereorthodoxy.com) in the next year, an ebook reader would be the natural next step.
Techcrunch also points out that Google is now allowing people [to embed parts of public domain texts in websites](http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/09/06/google-books-embed-book-clips-into-websites/?ref=mereorthodoxy.com), just as people can embed [YouTube videos](http://www.youtube.com/?ref=mereorthodoxy.com) or [Google Maps.](http://www.maps.google.com/?ref=mereorthodoxy.com)
