The last two years I have been engaged in educating homeschoolers through Torrey Academy. An outstanding program, Torrey Academy takes otherwise solitary high school students and draws them into genuine communities around what purports to be a great books curriculum. It's great books "lite," if you will--which is actually better for most 21st century high schoolers.
Working with Torrey Academy has been close to a dream job. I have been able to watch some students go from sleepy to bright-eyed. Others simply pointed their enthusiasm to deepening their faith. Others began to pursue learning for its own sake, and not for the grade. It is the students that have made the job full of meaning, and it is the students that I will miss the most.
I have decided to make the difficult and painful decision to leave Torrey Academy and pursue opportunities elsewhere, namely with Wheatstone Academy, a worldview development summer camp. I will be in charge of curriculum there, which is almost a purely administrative position. It is difficult to leave Biola, as my loyalties run deep, but I have realized that now is the time to continue to develop administrative and professional skills that I might not gain through teaching alone. Wheatstone Academy affords me an excellent opportunity to do just that.
