From the UK's Guardian earlier this month:
By Zeus!
After a break of 16 centuries, Greek pagans are worshiping the ancient gods again - despite furious opposition from the Orthodox church. Helena Smith asks them why they're so keen to revive the old religion."
You're welcome to read the whole article; you can find it here . But I just wanted to highlight a key quote:
Sixteen and a half centuries is a very long time to wait," she said. "After so many years of Christian persecution we were finally able to call on Zeus, our king-god, to bring peace to the world"
Many a witty rejoinder could be made here (and I hope you, gentle reader, will not refrain from giving one of your own in our Comments). However, let me my rest for today with the observation of my friend, K-W :
If they were the real deal, they would be saying, "Father Zeus is angry for the 1500-year neglect of his altars!"
But that would be simply passé . Capricious gods of wrath are just so first-millennium. All the cool post-Christian deities want dancing flowers and peace on earth.
